The leader of Chega expressed sorrow today over the passing of footballer Diogo Jota and his brother, noting that the Portuguese international was “someone who gave so much” and left “too soon,” describing it as “a sad day.”
“I want to publicly express the consternation and pain, and also convey, on behalf of Chega, the grief that many Portuguese and people worldwide are feeling today regarding the death of someone who gave us so much and represented so much in our sport,” he stated after a meeting with the prime minister at the official residence.
André Ventura offered “a sincere note of recognition and condolences” to the player’s family, friends, and loved ones.
In a social media message, the president of Chega had written that “today is a sad day for Portugal.”
“Diogo Jota, who always represented the colors of our flag so well, left too soon. He carries with him the pride of an entire nation,” Ventura said, conveying “heartfelt condolences to the family.”
Portuguese international footballer Diogo Jota, aged 28, and his brother André Silva, aged 25, who played for Penafiel, died earlier today in a traffic accident on the A52 in Cernadilla, Zamora, Spain.
Diogo Jota was a player for Liverpool, a club he had represented for five seasons, winning an English League, an FA Cup, two League Cups, and a Super Cup, and also becoming a Championship champion, the English second tier, with Wolverhampton.
After training at Gondomar and Paços de Ferreira, the forward played for one season at FC Porto on loan from Atlético de Madrid, after which he was loaned by the Spaniards to Wolverhampton, where he spent three seasons.
In the Portuguese national team, Diogo Jota, who recently married the mother of his three children, earned 49 caps, winning two editions of the Nations League, the most recent in June this year.
