Two deaths and 208 rescues recorded since the beginning of the bathing season.

The National Maritime Authority (AMN) reported two fatalities, 208 rescues, and 643 first aid interventions on Portuguese beaches over a two-month period in the bathing season, from May 1 to June 30, as per a statement released today.

In a note, the AMN highlighted that the two deaths, due to drowning, occurred on May 25 at Praia de Pedrógão in Leiria, which was not supervised on the date of the incident.

The victims were two brothers, aged 10 and 15, who were with their family and disappeared after allegedly swimming at Praia do Pedrógão, which is only monitored between June 7 and September 14.

According to the AMN, from May 1 to June 30, there were 208 rescues and 643 first aid actions performed.

Officially, the bathing season begins on June 1, but municipalities are at liberty to start it before or after this date.
