“He is a candidate like any other candidate,” stated Albuquerque, although he had already expressed his personal support for Luís Marques Mendes’ candidacy.
Albuquerque, also the president of PSD/Madeira, spoke on the sidelines of the opening of ExpoMadeira, the region’s largest economic activities fair, which is taking place in Funchal until July 13, shortly after meeting with Gouveia e Melo at Quinta Vigia, the headquarters of the Regional Government Presidency.
The admiral commenced a three-day visit to the region today, which includes a trip to the island of Porto Santo on Sunday.
“We discussed some issues that are fundamental to the future of the region”, said Miguel Albuquerque, emphasizing that Gouveia e Melo “knows Madeira and Porto Santo well and is aware of a number of persistent problems that need to be resolved.”
“The future President of the Republic must have an influence over these issues”, he reinforced.
The head of the Madeira government remarked that Gouveia e Melo is “a candidate like any other candidate,” but expressed “great regard and esteem” for him, downplaying the issue of his lack of political experience.
“There are some who have political experience and are not good at politics. They are only good at the experience, never at making good policies”, he argued.
