From payment dates to the ‘invoice’ of inheritance: The themes of the week

Beneficiaries of Social Security support should be aware of a monthly payment schedule released by the entity. The official website features a section dedicated to payments, and the dates for July have been announced.

By consulting the schedule, beneficiaries can plan their family budget more effectively for the upcoming month, as they will know when to expect their social benefits.

Payments commenced on Thursday, July 3, with pensions and allowances related to occupational disease.

The Variable Rate Treasury Bonds (OTRV) have been reissued in a new series by the Agency for Treasury and Public Debt Management (IGCP). These bonds serve as an alternative to Savings Certificates, but how exactly do they work?

According to the IGCP, OTRVs are “scriptural securities governed by Portuguese law, representing medium and long-term loans of the Portuguese Republic.” They are designed to “boost the public debt market by diversifying public debt instruments and distribution channels available to investors and broadening the investor base of the Portuguese Republic.”

The government’s proposal to reduce the Personal Income Tax (IRS) may apply to individuals earning up to 6,297 euros, based on calculations by DECO PROTeste.

The consumer protection organization notes that the measure “envisions a reduction in marginal rates up to the 8th step, meaning for incomes up to 83,696 euros.”

The bill was introduced in Parliament last week and anticipates an additional IRS reduction of 500 million euros this year, with a 0.5 percentage point reduction between the first and third steps, 0.6 points between the fourth and sixth, and 0.4 points in the seventh and eighth.

The beginning of July brought some relief in temperatures compared to recent days, but investing in air conditioning has become more burdensome for the Portuguese. Starting Tuesday, equipment like solar panels, heat pumps, and air conditioners will no longer benefit from the reduced VAT rate.

Previously, these items were taxed at a 6% VAT rate, but as of July, they are taxed at the standard 23% VAT rate. This change is due to the end of the reduced tax rate application on the purchase of energy-efficient appliances.

Those receiving an inheritance should consider certain costs, as expenses are associated with the process. Do you know what the main ones are?

As explained by the Saldo Positivo site of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, these costs “are related to bureaucracies and other necessary expenses to resolve succession issues.”

“Inheritances are often a source of conflict. But, even in cases where the division of assets is cordial, apart from the formalities necessary to handle when a family member dies, the process of transferring assets to your possession is not free of costs,” the site further outlines.
