Fishing boat sinks at the Afurada dock in Vila Nova de Gaia

The National Maritime Authority (AMN) has reported that a fishing vessel sank early this morning at the Afurada quay in Vila Nova de Gaia, with the causes of the incident still unknown.

In a statement, the AMN indicated they were informed of the sinking at 2:53 a.m. by the vessel’s owner. Members of the Douro Local Maritime Police Command were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, they confirmed the vessel was already submerged, prompting the Douro, Leixões, and Viana do Castelo Port Administration (APDL) to deploy a “floating barrier around it.”

This measure aimed to “contain pollutants, and there are no signs of pollution reported at this time.”

“The vessel’s owner has been notified to remove the vessel from the location, and navigation can only resume following an inspection to ensure normal navigational conditions,” the statement reads.
