Several municipalities at maximum fire risk (mostly inland)

The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed almost all municipalities across the 18 districts of mainland Portugal under very high and high fire risk alerts.

Only the municipalities of Esposende, in Braga, and Olhão, in Faro, are not currently facing a fire risk.

The institute’s calculations predict that the rural fire danger will remain high in the coming days, particularly in several districts located in the northern and central interior.

This fire risk is determined by IPMA based on five levels, ranging from reduced to maximum. The calculations incorporate factors such as air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and the amount of precipitation over the last 24 hours.

According to IPMA, the districts of Bragança, Évora, Guarda, Vila Real, Beja, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre are under a yellow alert until 6 p.m. on Tuesday due to the persistent high maximum temperatures.

The yellow alert, the least severe, is issued by IPMA when there is a risk for certain activities dependent on the weather conditions.

Today’s forecast for the mainland anticipates mostly clear or slightly cloudy skies, with clouds expected along the central coast by late afternoon.

Winds are expected to be strong along the west coast and in highland areas.

A slight temperature decrease is anticipated in the northern and central regions, while a minor increase is expected in the southern region.

Minimum temperatures are expected to range between 16 degrees Celsius in Viana do Castelo and 21 degrees in Portalegre, while maximum temperatures will vary from 23 degrees in Aveiro to 39 degrees in Évora and Beja.
