The National Maritime Authority (AMN) announced that following an alert received at 11:18 a.m. on Saturday, personnel from the Setúbal Maritime Police Command, the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM), and firefighters were dispatched to the Port of Sesimbra.
Upon arrival, the operatives found that “a maritime-tourism dive support vessel in the vicinity had transported the victim to the Port of Sesimbra,” the statement read.
The INEM medical emergency and resuscitation team carried out “resuscitation maneuvers, but the situation could not be reversed,” AMN added, noting that the cause of the diver’s death remains unknown.
Speaking to Lusa agency today, Setúbal Port Captain and Local Maritime Police Commander Marco Serrano Augusto disclosed that “a vessel passing by the area saw the diver in the water, retrieved him, and brought him ashore.”
“We will now have to determine what happened. In such cases, the maritime authority takes all the precautionary police measures and communicates the accident to the Public Prosecutor’s Office,” he added.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office is responsible for “initiating an inquiry for further investigations,” the Setúbal Maritime Police Commander mentioned.
As a precautionary measure, the Maritime Police “seized all material related to the diving activity practiced by the victim,” amongst other procedures, the same official stated.
According to the AMN statement, the death certification was conducted at the Port of Sesimbra by an INEM doctor.
The body was subsequently transported to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Setúbal by Sesimbra Volunteer Firefighters, following authorization from the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The Maritime Police’s Psychology Office has been activated and is providing support to the victim’s family members.
