Portuguese embassy reopened in Tehran

“In a phased manner, we have reopened the embassy [on Sunday], and in a second phase, the consular section will be reopened after due evaluation,” added the same source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Days after Israel launched a military offensive against Iran, the Portuguese government ordered the temporary closure of its embassy in Tehran and began the repatriation of Portuguese nationals in Iran.

“I have ordered the temporary closure of the embassy in Tehran due to the seriousness of the current situation,” announced on June 17 by the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel.

At that time, several EU countries also decided to temporarily close their diplomatic representations in the Iranian capital.

The same source told Lusa today that the Portuguese embassy was the first to reopen among the European counterparts.

Israel launched a war against Iran on June 13 with the stated aim of preventing the country from acquiring a nuclear bomb, an intention denied by the Islamic Republic.

The war continued until June 24, when U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire.

During the 12-day conflict, Israel attacked Iranian military, nuclear, and energy facilities, as well as residential areas in Tehran. It resulted in the deaths of at least 30 senior military commanders and 11 nuclear scientists, while Iran responded with waves of missile attacks.
