A major update to cabin baggage policies was announced last week by Airlines for Europe (A4E), the European association of airlines. The new standard dimension for free under-seat hand luggage is set to be 40 × 30 × 15 cm.
“The free bag, referred to as a ‘personal item,’ which can be carried on board under the seat, will now have a uniform size across multiple airlines. This measure comes from an agreement among airlines within the Airlines for Europe group, including TAP, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, and EasyJet,” stated the consumer organization DECO PROTeste.
As a result, “the maximum dimensions for personal items will now be 40x30x15 cm for all airlines within the Airlines for Europe,” with the new standard expected to be implemented by the end of this summer.
“However, some airlines included in this agreement will still allow larger personal items during boarding,” noted the consumer protection group.
Best Travel Luggage
According to a detailed analysis by DECO PROTeste, travel luggage is fundamentally of two types: hard-shell (made of plastic) and semi-rigid (made of nylon or polyester).
“Hard-shell luggage tends to offer better protection for contents and is generally more durable, especially against falls and water ingress. Semi-rigid luggage, being lighter and more affordable, also offers good durability, though less protective against water, which can be mitigated with a waterproof cover,” noted the organization.
Luggage with “360-degree rotating wheels provides better maneuverability in all directions. Meanwhile, two-wheel luggage is a suitable option for uneven surfaces.”
“The telescopic handle plays a key role in handling luggage. It must accommodate different hand sizes and should be comfortable over long use. The handle should extend to at least 105 centimeters, preventing taller users from tripping the trolley when walking. Adjustable handle positions are beneficial for accommodating people of varying heights,” the organization remarked.
Tips for Packing
The consumer advocacy group shared practical tips for packing and arranging luggage:
- Utilize the space created by the telescopic handle’s protrusions with small items like pouches or socks.
- Store fragile items on top, wrapped in clothing to cushion them during impacts.
- Place weight-bearing items like shoes at the bottom, near the wheels, to support the rest of the luggage.
- Rolling clothes can save space and reduce wrinkles.
- To easily open the suitcase, distribute less weight on one side.
- Keep frequently accessed items on top without securing them with straps for quick retrieval.
