More than 100 municipalities in 12 districts at maximum fire risk

The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has placed nearly all municipalities across the 18 districts at a very high and high risk.

The institute’s calculations indicate that the rural fire risk will remain elevated in certain districts in the upcoming days.

This risk, assessed by IPMA, ranges from low to maximum across five levels. The calculations depend on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and rainfall over the past 24 hours.

According to the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), there have been 2,999 fire incidents since the beginning of the year, affecting 8,278 hectares of rural areas.

Due to the hot weather, IPMA has issued a yellow warning for the districts of Évora, Guarda, Beja, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre until 18:00 today, and Bragança and Vila Real until 21:00 on Wednesday.

The yellow warning, the least severe, is issued by IPMA when there is a risk for certain activities due to weather conditions.

Today’s forecast for the mainland includes partly cloudy to clear skies, light to moderate winds, an increase in maximum temperatures along the northern and central coasts, and a slight decrease in the Algarve.

Minimum temperatures are expected to range between 13 degrees Celsius (in Bragança) and 24 (in Portalegre), with maximums from 29 (in Faro) up to 39 (in Évora and Beja).
