The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) released the weather forecast for Tuesday, July 8, at the end of Monday. If it’s heat you’re looking for, heat is what you’ll get!
The IPMA indicates that today the sky will be “slightly cloudy or clear” with a “rise in maximum temperature in the northern and central coastal regions.” However, Algarve will experience a “slight decrease.”
As for the wind, it will be “light to moderate,” up to 30 km/h, “predominantly from the west, shifting to the east in the northern region.” It may blow “occasionally strong in the highlands of the North and Center regions until mid-morning and at the end of the day.”
Évora will be the hottest district, possibly reaching a maximum of 39ºC, with Braga following closely with a high of 38ºC, according to the IPMA website.
Atenção! IPMA places more than 100 municipalities at maximum fire risk
The IPMA has placed over 100 municipalities across 12 districts—Bragança, Porto, Braga, Vila Real, Viseu, Aveiro, Coimbra, Guarda, Portalegre, Santarém, Castelo Branco, and Faro—on alert due to the maximum risk of rural fires.
Due to the hot weather, the IPMA has issued a yellow warning for the districts of Évora, Guarda, Beja, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre until 6:00 PM today, and Bragança and Vila Real until 9:00 PM on Wednesday.
The yellow warning, the least severe, is issued by the IPMA when there is a risk for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.

Onda de calor causou mais de 280 mortes em excesso
Continental Portugal registered 284 excess deaths during the hot weather alert period, primarily among individuals aged 85 and older.
Preliminary data from the Directorate-General of Health (DGS) indicate that the 284 excess deaths occurred between June 28 and the early days of July, with 70% of the excess mortality among those aged 85 or older.
The DGS further noted that the impact of this hot weather episode on excess mortality was similar to what was observed in the past two years.
For instance, last year (2024), between July 22 and August 4, 715 excess deaths were registered, representing a relative excess of 19% compared to expected figures. In 2023, from August 21 to 27, there were 384 excess deaths, a relative excess of 20% compared to expected.
