Step by step: This is how you find out if you have debts to Social Security

Do you know if you have debts to Social Security? Is your contribution status regularized? There is a way to find out all this online, without having to visit any offices or stand in queues.

The Declaration of Contribution Status, a document that can be obtained through Social Security Direct, is pivotal in this process (it now has a new site, learn more here).

“New functionalities are available on Social Security Direct, enabling the issuance of these declarations more simply and quickly, avoiding the need to visit Social Security services,” stated the Social Security Institute (ISS) in a statement.

Additionally, you can also obtain the Contribution Career Statement and the Contact Verification online, which is why the ISS refers to declarations.

How to Obtain the Declaration

According to the ISS, to get the Declaration of Contribution Status (Declaration of no Social Security debt status), you should start by accessing Social Security Direct and then follow these steps:

Current Account > Contribution Status > Obtain Contribution Status Declaration > Obtain New Declaration

In practice, this is a “declaration that proves you have no debts to Social Security or, if there are debts, that installment payment has been authorized.”

Who is it for and how long does it last?

According to the information provided on the Social Security website, this declaration is intended for:

  • the taxpayer (employers or self-employed) or their legal representative;
  • other citizens covered by another Social Protection system (e.g., Voluntary Social Insurance), or their legal representative;
  • any creditor (to whom money is owed) or the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Additionally, the “declaration is issued up to 10 working days after the request (with all necessary elements) or after judicial notification (when requested by the Public Prosecutor)” and the “validity of the contribution status declaration ends after four months.”

When is the contribution status regularized?

According to Social Security, the contribution status is considered regularized when:

  • there are no debts of contributions, quotas, and interest on arrears or other amounts owed to Social Security;
  • there are debts, but payment has been authorized in installments, and the conditions are being met, such as the payment of the first installment and the provision of guarantees when applicable;
  • there are debts, but the taxpayer has challenged or appealed judicially, provided they have provided a payment guarantee.

What if there are debts?

Social Security further explains that “if there is debt, the declaration is issued with the value of contributions, interest, fines, costs, and other values, including debts related to installment agreements, bank charges, among others.”
