The Lisbon Culture Bookstore will be inaugurated in Baixa to “tell the city”

Lisbon’s new bookstore, Livraria Lisboa Cultura, emphasizes the significance of books in the city’s cultural policy by offering a diverse perspective on everything related to Lisbon. As described by the Lisbon City Council, the bookstore serves as “an anchor for the knowledge and discovery of the city.”

Situated at numbers 22 and 23 of Praça D. Pedro IV (Rossio), next to the iconic Café Nicola and Tabacaria Mónaco, the bookstore features a catalog of over 1,500 titles either published or co-published by the municipality, covering a wide range of themes centered on Lisbon.

“The municipal titles are complemented by others from various publishers, all focused on the city. Each publication, each book, tells an aspect of Lisbon,” explained the council.

This dynamic space, intended to be lively and frequently visited, will host “a regular program of discussions, presentations, and activities, and collaborate in the cultural promotion of the city,” echoing “the activities of municipal agents — valuing them — in continuous collaboration.”

The inauguration is scheduled for 3:00 PM, followed an hour later by a literary tour of Rossio, exploring the literary references of this prestigious city square. At 6:00 PM, a discussion about the bookstore’s catalog will take place.

During the presentation of the Lisbon Book Fair in May, City Council President Carlos Moedas (PSD) announced that Livraria Lisboa Cultura will primarily sell “editions from the council, many of which do not reach the public, such as titles by Marquês de Pombal and Ressano Garcia.”

Livraria Lisboa Cultura is open from Monday to Saturday, from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and the project was developed in collaboration between the Municipal Directorate of Culture and the municipal company Lisboa Cultura.
