Gouveia e Melo is a “candidate like others,” but Albuquerque reveals “esteem”

“He is a candidate like any other candidate,” stated Albuquerque, although he noted having already expressed his personal support for Luís Marques Mendes’s candidacy.

Albuquerque, also the president of PSD/Madeira, spoke on the sidelines of the opening of ExpoMadeira, the largest economic activities fair in the region, which is taking place in Funchal until July 13, shortly after meeting with Gouveia e Melo at Quinta Vigia, the seat of the Regional Government Presidency.

The admiral began a three-day visit to the region today, which includes a trip to Porto Santo Island on Sunday.

“We talked about some issues that are crucial for the future of the region,” said Miguel Albuquerque, emphasizing that Gouveia e Melo “knows Madeira and Porto Santo well and understands that there are a set of problems that persist and need to be solved.”

“The future President of the Republic must have the power to influence this matter,” he reinforced.

The head of the Madeira government remarked that Gouveia e Melo is “a candidate like any other candidate,” but expressed “great respect and esteem” for him, downplaying the issue of a lack of political experience.

“There are some who have political experience and are no good at politics. They are only good for experience, never for making good policies,” he argued.
