“In summer, with the heat, continue to eat safely!” This is the theme of a post by the Directorate-General of Health (DGS), released on social media this Wednesday, where the agency references some essential advice that the Portuguese should follow at this time of year.

The DGS begins by emphasizing the need to keep “everything clean”, offering three recommendations: “Wash your hands before, during, and after food preparation”, “keep garbage covered and empty it regularly”, and “clean surfaces and utensils”

You should also use “potable water”, with careful attention to a fundamental point: “Separate raw food from cooked food”

In this process, the DGS also reminds: “Cook and reheat food thoroughly (cooked >70ºC)”

“Keep food at safe temperatures!”

The Directorate-General of Health also stresses the importance of maintaining the safety of food and temperature, especially during periods of extreme heat.

In this regard, the DGS offers three pieces of advice:

  • “Defrost food in the refrigerator or microwave;
  • Do not leave cooked food at room temperature for more than 2 hours;
  • Refrigerate fresh and cooked products as soon as possible (5ºC).”

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasted for today that the mainland would experience mostly sunny or clear skies, with periods of heavy cloudiness on the west coast, potential light precipitation, light to moderate winds, and a drop in temperature, except on the southern coast of the Algarve.

The minimum temperatures range between 16 degrees Celsius (in Bragança and Leiria) and 21 (in Castelo Branco), with maximums between 22 (in Viana do Castelo) and 36 (in Castelo Branco, Bragança, and Beja).
