
Contacted by Lusa, José Viana confirmed the dangers associated with the smoke, emphasizing that “scrap is burning and potentially releasing dangerous gases for the population,” advising nearby residents to “keep windows closed and stay protected.”
The company involved is Sucateira Constantino Fernandes Oliveira & Filhos, SA, in Pedroso.
“We have been reinforcing resources to tackle the advancing flames,” reported the commander of the Sapadores de Vila Nova de Gaia, who estimated that the firefighting efforts “will last, at least, another four hours.”
According to the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection’s website, at 19:45, 91 operatives and 34 vehicles were engaged in fighting the blaze, with two firefighters requiring assistance on site.
