New Sintra Hospital inaugurates on Monday and opens emergency services on Saturday

The new Sintra Hospital is set to commence operations progressively, starting with some consultations today, followed by the opening of the basic emergency service (SUB) on Saturday, and beginning surgical and inpatient activities on Monday, stated Carlos Sá.

During a visit to this healthcare facility, which will augment the services of the Hospital Professor Doutor Fernando Fonseca (HFF), the head of ULS Amadora-Sintra emphasized a phased approach to the increase in activities.

“The hospital is fully operational. The phased increase in activity is to ensure smooth functioning of all circuits and patient safety. By next week, the hospital will be fully functional,” he highlighted.

The basic emergency service of the new Sintra Hospital will open two days post the temporary suspension at Mem-Martins due to service transfers.

“The basic emergency service will commence operation on Saturday at 08:00. Patients needing this service should first contact SNS24 [808 242 424]. If directed to the SUB, it will be operational here at the hospital from 08:00 on Saturday.

This facility will ease the burden on HFF, one of the largest hospitals in the Lisbon and Vale do Tejo region, by handling non-urgent cases in its emergency service.

“We aim to offer a wide range of services in consultations, surgeries, hospitalizations, and emergencies to provide more specialized and closer care to the communities we serve,” Carlos Sá noted.

The hospital, located in Casal da Cavaleira, Algueirão-Mem Martins, covers 10,500 square meters indoors and 49,000 square meters in uncovered space and began construction in 2021.

This initiative by Câmara Municipal de Sintra involves over 62 million euros and is expected to benefit 550,000 users.

Carlos Sá detailed that the total investment was nearly 81 million euros.

“The project involves construction costs of 63.8 million euros and an additional 17 million euros for equipment and furnishings, totaling around 81 million euros,” he said.

The Sintra Hospital includes outpatient services, external consultations, a mental health unit, physical rehabilitation medicine, a central collection unit, and complementary diagnostic and therapeutic resources, along with an ambulatory surgery unit with operating block and recovery area.

The facility will also manage approximately 60,000 emergencies, about half those handled by Hospital Amadora-Sintra, and includes a 60-bed Convalescence Unit, Pharmacy, sterilization unit, and teaching and training spaces.
