A dozen may not be cheaper: How much does the summer basket cost?

A DECO PROteste revealed its latest analysis this Friday, focusing on products most consumed during the summer.

Besides the study on the price variation of 63 essential products, conducted weekly, this new seasonal analysis “encompasses 12 products usually used” during this season.

The products analyzed here include pork steaks, whole chicken, sea bass, bream, mackerel, extra virgin olive oil, Frankfurt sausages, ground coffee, curly lettuce, pear tomatoes, onions, and red potatoes.

The analysis was conducted from July 2 to 9, and according to it, this dozen items costs 50.22 € this week.

The ‘podium’ of the highest increases

According to the experts, mackerel was the product that rose the most within a week, experiencing a price increase of 24.17%. On July 2, the price per kilogram was 3.99 euros; by Wednesday, July 9, it had risen to 4.95 euros (a 96-cent difference per kilogram).

Also on the podium of foods that increased the most is an essential for many early risers: ground coffee, which last week cost 3.99 euros, now stands at 4.86 euros (a price change of 21.84%).

Lastly, among these top price risers is curly lettuce, which saw a price increase of 20.15% from the previous week, now costing 2.52 euros.

From the aforementioned list, other foods also saw price hikes, including red potatoes (9.52%), pear tomatoes (2.61%), and bream (0.90%).

The whole chicken, however, showed no change: whether purchased last week or this week, it hovered around 2.81 euros per kilogram.

What became cheaper?

Five items in this ‘extra’ basket became cheaper: sea bass (-0.33%), extra virgin olive oil (-1.95%), pork steaks (-2.18%), Frankfurt sausages (-7.68%), and finally, onions, which saw a price reduction of 11.45%—while last week this commonly used item in Portuguese cuisine was priced at 1.48 euros per kilogram, it now costs 1.31 €/kg.

And the usual basket?

As for the basket of 63 essential items monitored by the consumer protection association, another analysis indicates it is on an “upward trajectory.”

“In the past week, the basket of 63 essential food items monitored by DECO PROteste since 2022 recorded a price increase of 74 cents (up 0.31%), reaching 240.12 euros”, the note states.

In the past week, the products that increased the most in this wide range were also from July 2 to 9: ground coffee, mackerel (24%), curly lettuce (20%), and fish fingers (18%).

Since DECO PROteste began this analysis on January 5, 2022, “the highest percentage increases were in boiling beef (97%), eggs (75%), and tomato pulp (70%).”
