Wall Street begins the last session of the week with losses

At 2:48 PM Lisbon time, the Dow Jones index was down 0.78% at 44,300.74 points, while the Nasdaq technological index fell 0.47% to 20,533.17 points.

At the same time, the broad S&P 500 stood at 6,239.65 points, losing 0.65%.

Wall Street closed on Thursday, with the Nasdaq index reaching a new historical high at the start of the day.

The Nasdaq, an index of high-tech stocks, closed up 0.09% at 20,630.66 points, marking a new all-time high.

The Dow Jones ended up 0.43% at 44,650.64 points, compared to the highest since the index was created in 1896, which was 45,014.04 points on December 4, 2024.

Skepticism in the markets arises after Trump announced he will impose a 35% tariff on imports from Canada starting August 1.

“Instead of working with the United States, Canada retaliated with its own tariffs,” the Republican justified on Thursday.

“From August 1, 2025, we will impose a 35% tariff on Canadian goods exported to the United States, irrespective of any sector-specific tariffs,” the President wrote.

Trump specified that the tariffs will be added to those imposed on specific sectors, such as steel or automobiles, two of Canada’s main exports to the United States, Ottawa’s largest trading partner.
