Woman steals earrings from jewelry store in Leiria and pays a fine of 650 euros

A 51-year-old woman was arrested by the Public Security Police (PSP) on July 7 in Leiria for committing a simple theft at a jewelry store.

In a statement, the PSP explained that the woman “removed several gold earrings displayed in a showcase, valued at approximately 10,000 euros.”

The woman was “sentenced to pay a fine of 650 euros” or, alternatively, she would have to serve “86 days of subsidiary imprisonment.”

After being confronted with the facts, she “immediately opted to pay the fine.”

Crimes by theft: how is it punished?

According to information on the Diário da República website, this type of crime “involves the conduct of, with illegitimate intent to appropriate for oneself or another person, removing another’s movable property or animal.”

In general, it is “punishable by up to three years in prison or a fine. However, the penalties can be increased under many circumstances.”

It is a crime that “is generally semi-public, meaning that the criminal proceedings depend on the filing of a complaint.”
