A 21-year-old man was arrested on Thursday, July 10, for robbing another young man, aged 20, at the Festas do Senhor de Matosinhos venue on May 28.
The assailant intimidated the victim “not to report the incident to the authorities” after robbing him and causing “facial injuries” using a firearm and physical violence, according to a statement released Friday by the Polícia Judiciária (PJ).
The note to the press also reported that the suspect stole “items valued in the hundreds of euros.”
The investigation conducted by the PJ’s Northern Directorate allowed for the collection of “relevant evidence that reinforces the indications of the mentioned crimes”; among them, the firearm used in the assaults.
The individual, who is charged with the crimes of aggravated robbery, qualified assault, coercion, unlawful access, and possession of a prohibited weapon, will now be presented to judicial authorities for the application of preventive measures.
The PJ also highlighted that the young man had no criminal record.
Violent and serious crime increased by 2.6% last year compared to 2023, with 14,385 crimes recorded, while general crime decreased by 4.6% with 354,878 reports, according to the Annual Internal Security Report (RASI).
The report specified that the crimes that saw the greatest increases were purse snatching (up 8.7%), vehicle theft (up 106.3%), robberies in commercial or industrial buildings (up 21.7%), rape (up 9.9%), and bank or other credit establishment robberies (up 128.6%).
Meanwhile, general crime, recorded by entities including the GNR, PSP, PJ, Maritime Police, ASAE, Tax and Customs Authority, and the Military Judiciary Police, totaled 354,878 reports in 2024, 17,117 fewer than in 2023.
