Jaime Reis premieres new works from the series ‘Inverse Blood – Blood Inverse’

The concert, taking place at the Vianna da Motta Auditorium, is part of the week dedicated to the postgraduate studies in applied musical composition at the Lisbon Superior School of Music. It represents the seventh segment of ‘Sangue Inverso – Inverso Sangue’, a work composed for various instrumental ensembles. This piece has been developed over recent years and consists of movements that can be performed either individually or simultaneously.

In ‘Sangue Inverso – Inverso Sangue’, each piece, whether standalone or in sequence, is played with its inverse, and can be followed by a third piece resulting from the overlap of the previous ones.

Each piece is named after a mineral, fossil, or rock—such as magnetite, amber, amethyst, granite, obsidian, cinnabar—evoking “colors, sensations, values, vibrations, ideas,” in a construction that is “both simple and complex, exploring the connections between singular and collective.”

The premiere coincides with Jaime Reis receiving the Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa (IPL) – Caixa Geral de Depósitos Scientific Awards and the Recognition of Activities with Community Relevance Awards, both granted annually by IPL.

Jaime Reis, a composer, researcher, and professor at the Lisbon Superior School of Music, is the first to earn both awards in the same year, recognizing areas of knowledge at the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, which includes arts, social sciences, technology, and engineering.

The awards are intended to acknowledge and value the merit and contribution of academic community members, both in scientific production and artistic creation as well as their engagement with society, according to IPL.

For the IPL-CGD Scientific Awards, excellence in research and creation is emphasized, while the Recognition of Activities with Community Relevance Awards highlight initiatives that build bridges between academia and civil society, adds IPL.

With a career internationally recognized in contemporary music and artistic research, Jaime Reis joins composers like Luís Tinoco, Ricardo Pinheiro, and Carlos Caires, who were awarded in previous editions.
