Urban fire displaces two families in Ponta Delgada

A fire originated in a vehicle and spread to two residential annexes where two families lived, according to the chief officer of the Ponta Delgada Volunteer Firefighters, Valdemar Furtado. These families have been rehoused by the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Ponta Delgada.

“[The two annexes] were destroyed and rendered uninhabitable, leaving four adults and one child homeless,” Furtado stated.

The fire also caused minor injuries to an adult, who required hospital treatment.

The Ponta Delgada firefighters, who responded with three fire engines and ten personnel, were called to the scene at 9:45 AM local time (one hour ahead in Lisbon). The flames were declared extinguished by 12:25 PM local time.

The Public Security Police (PSP) and the Judiciary Police were present at the site to investigate the causes of the fire, as confirmed by Valdemar Furtado.

Lusa contacted the PSP and the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Ponta Delgada but was unable to obtain further information about the incident.
