Dozens of municipalities in the northern and central interior, along with the Algarve, are at very high risk, while many municipalities located in Alentejo and along the northern coast are at high risk, according to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
The institute’s calculations indicate that the danger of rural fires will begin to increase from Tuesday due to the predicted rise in temperatures and will remain high at least until the weekend in some districts.
This risk, determined by IPMA, has five levels ranging from reduced to maximum. Calculations are based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and the amount of precipitation in the last 24 hours.
Due to the hot weather, IPMA has issued a yellow warning for the districts of Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Vila Real, Beja, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre, from 9:00 AM Tuesday to 6:00 PM Wednesday.
IPMA has also issued a yellow warning for the southern coast and mountainous regions of Madeira Island, from 9:00 AM Tuesday to 9:00 PM Wednesday due to the hot weather.
A yellow warning is issued by IPMA when there is a “risk situation for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.”
For today, IPMA forecasts for the continent a mostly clear or slightly cloudy sky, stronger winds on the west coast and highlands, possible morning fog formation, and a slight temperature rise, except for the maximum in the central coastal region where a slight decrease is expected.
Minimum temperatures will range between 12 degrees Celsius (in Guarda) and 18 (in Aveiro and Lisbon), and maximums between 23 (in Viana do Castelo) and 28 (in Santarém and Bragança).
For the Madeira archipelago, a generally very cloudy sky is expected, gradually decreasing cloudiness from the morning, with possible light showers in the highlands and the northern slope of Madeira Island, light to moderate winds, and a slight drop in maximum temperature.
In Funchal, temperatures will vary between 21 and 27 degrees, while in Porto Santo they will range between 19 and 25 degrees.
