The new hospital unit will support the Amadora-Sintra Hospital, one of the largest in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, by handling non-urgent cases in the emergency department.
The inauguration takes place two days after the new hospital opened its basic emergency service (SUB).
Carlos Sá, chairman of the board of directors of ULS Amadora-Sintra, stated that the hospital will begin operations gradually.
Following the opening of the SUB on Saturday, the hospital unit today opens for surgical activities and inpatient care.
The SUB of the new Hospital de Sintra became operational two days after being temporarily suspended in Mem-Martins due to service transfers last week.
Carlos Sá expressed that the new hospital will “provide more differentiated and closer care for the populations” of Amadora and Sintra, “in terms of consultation, surgical level, inpatient care, and, naturally, in emergencies.”
The new Hospital de Sintra, which began construction four years ago, is located in Casal da Cavaleira, Algueirão-Mem Martins parish, covering an area of 10,500 square meters indoors and 49,000 square meters outdoors.
It represents a total investment of about 81 million euros and will benefit 550,000 users.
The chairman of the board of directors of ULS Amadora-Sintra revealed that the building’s construction cost reached 63.8 million euros, while the acquisition of equipment and furniture amounted to over 17 million euros.
The Hospital de Sintra includes an outpatient service, external consultations and examinations, a mental health unit, physical rehabilitation medicine, a collection center, and supplementary diagnostic and therapeutic means, an outpatient surgery unit with surgery and recovery rooms.
It also has a basic emergency service capable of handling around 60,000 emergencies, about half the number conducted at Amadora-Sintra Hospital, 60 inpatient beds, a pharmacy, sterilization unit, and space for education and training.
