“Government tries to go along a bit with Chega”

In anticipation of Thursday’s debate on the state of the nation in the Assembly of the Republic, the leader of the Chega parliamentary group expressed concerns, stating that “the country is not well” but noted that the government is showing “a bit more willingness” to engage in dialogue with the party, particularly on issues such as immigration.

Pedro Pinto remarked that the “Government is trying to follow Chega’s lead,” viewing this as “a good sign,” signifying that André Ventura’s party is offering “good and valid proposals for the country’s functioning and progress.”

The president of the Chega parliamentary group emphasized, however, that the executive “cannot simultaneously engage with both the PS and Chega, as they are two completely opposing parties.” He insisted that a preferential partnership must be chosen for governance stability.

The Chega parliamentary leader cited the PS’s approval of the government’s proposed IRS reduction to illustrate that such agreements could not occur with his party, as Chega “advocates for a radical tax cut.”

“I understand that the PSD might find it more difficult to negotiate such tax cuts with us than with the Socialist Party, because, with the PS, they always ensure that Portuguese citizens don’t feel a tangible tax reduction,” he added.

Pedro Pinto also highlighted the country’s healthcare issues, particularly concerning the response of the INEM and emergency services, as a key issue that the government needs to address in parliament.

“This is something the PSD committed to resolving during the first year of their term; 14 months have gone by, and no solution is in sight,” he stated.

Pedro Pinto discussed the delay in the justice system as another major unresolved issue, stressing that “justice cannot function this way,” and calling for expedited procedures and better anti-corruption measures.

The state of the nation debate is scheduled for next Thursday, marking the first since the XXV Constitutional Government took office. It will feature the participation of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and other government officials.
