Man threatens doctor and two health professionals at a center in Barcelos

A 39-year-old man was arrested in Barcelos for threatening and insulting multiple healthcare professionals.

The incident occurred on July 11, a Friday. The authorities were alerted by those involved.

The GNR officers promptly went to the site and caught the suspect in the act.

According to a statement sent to newsrooms, the man was threatening and insulting two healthcare assistants and a doctor at a public health unit.

The detainee was named a defendant, and the facts were reported to the Judicial Court of Barcelos.

Incidents of Violence Against Healthcare Professionals Rise

National Health Service professionals reported 2,581 incidents of violence in 2024, a 9% increase from the previous year, which resulted in 1,185 days of work absence, according to the Executive Directorate of the NHS.

The majority of cases were psychological violence (1,703), followed by physical violence (578) and moral harassment (171). The remaining 129 situations were unspecified.

“The reported episodes of violence caused 1,185 days of work absence for the affected NHS professionals,” the Executive Directorate of the NHS highlights.

The most recent reported case occurred at Curry Cabral Hospital in Lisbon, when relatives of a deceased patient in the Nephrology Service threatened and assaulted two nurses and caused damage to the premises.

The police intervened, identifying “four suspects for causing disturbances.”

The NHS Executive Directorate mentions in a statement that the NHS has strengthened “violence prevention measures for healthcare professionals,” noting the increase in notifications of violence against NHS professionals in 2024.
