17-year-old dies after being swept away by current in Carcavelos

A 17-year-old boy died on Tuesday after being swept away by the ocean currents at Carcavelos beach in the Cascais region. Three other individuals were rescued and did not require medical assistance.

The National Maritime Authority (AMN) reported receiving an alert at 15:10 from lifeguards indicating that “a group of people had been swept away by currents” at Carcavelos beach.

“Immediately, crew members from the Cascais Lifeboat Station, elements of the Local Command of the Maritime Police of Cascais, Carcavelos Volunteer Firefighters, and INEM were activated. The Portuguese Navy ship ‘NRP Andrómeda’ was also present at the scene,” the statement on the website reads.

At the scene, it was found that “three of the victims had been promptly rescued by the lifeguards” and were “physically well, without needing medical assistance.”

“The three bathers alerted to a fourth individual who had been swept away. The lifeguards located the victim, a 17-year-old boy, and brought him to the shore, where they began resuscitation maneuvers until INEM personnel arrived to continue the efforts,” it continues.
