After a few rainy days at the end of last week, the heat has returned recently, and the sun is here to stay in mainland Portugal—at least until Wednesday, July 16.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) reports that the sky will be “generally clear” tomorrow; however, there will be an increase in “cloudiness in the northern and central coast from late afternoon.”
The wind is expected to be “generally light from the north quadrant, shifting to a light to moderate west quadrant,” up to 30 km/h, and at times, it could be “strong,” reaching up to 40 km/h, in the “western coastal strip south of Cabo da Roca and in the highlands from the afternoon.”
Experts note a “slight rise in minimum temperature in the interior” of the country, contrasting, however, with a “slight drop in maximum temperature on the northern and central coast.” The northeast of Trás-os-Montes and Beira will see a “slight increase.”
IPMA’s website indicates that the districts of Beja and Évora will record the highest temperatures, with thermometers reaching up to 39ºC. For the districts of Castelo Branco and Bragança, maximums of 38ºC are expected, followed by Vila Real and Portalegre, where maximum temperatures could reach up to 36ºC.
Know how to protect yourself from the heat?
With thermometers nearing 40ºC in some districts of mainland Portugal, it is important to heed some recommendations to protect against the heat.
What are the warning signs? And how to protect yourself?
According to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), warning signs may include “dizziness or headache,” “dry or hot skin,” “extreme fatigue,” and “nausea.”
To protect yourself, stay in cool places, avoid physical exertion during peak heat hours, wear light and clear clothing, and drink water even if not thirsty.
It should be noted that the elderly, children, and people with chronic illnesses are “more vulnerable.”
Ten districts on “yellow alert” until Wednesday
Due to the hot weather, IPMA placed the districts of Bragança, Viseu, Évora, Guarda, Beja, Vila Real, Castelo Branco, Setúbal, Faro, and Portalegre under yellow alert on Wednesday, extending this alert until 9:00 PM on Wednesday.
Please note that the yellow alert is issued when, according to the same institute, there is a “risk situation for certain activities dependent on the weather situation,” and it’s necessary to “monitor the evolution of weather conditions.”

The alerts will be in effect in these eight districts between 9:00 AM on next Tuesday and 6:00 PM on next Wednesday, according to information released by IPMA.

Due to the hot weather, there is also a heightened risk of rural fires, so it’s important to be aware of the advice and recommendations from the authorities.
- Never flick cigarette butts or litter on the ground: a simple oversight can cause a large fire;
- Keep the land around your home clean, creating a protective strip;
- Do not make bonfires or use open flames during periods of high risk;
- Avoid using machinery that causes sparks (brush cutters, chainsaws, etc.) during peak heat hours;
The PSP warns: “If you see smoke or fire, call 112 immediately. In case of evacuation, always follow the authorities’ instructions.”

Due to the maximum fire risk in various districts of mainland Portugal, the PSP utilized its social media channels to remind the public of measures to prevent fires.
