The Liberal Initiative (IL) candidate for the Oeiras City Council, Bruno Mourão Martins, accused the Social Democratic Party (PSD) of “remaining aligned with Isaltino Morais” after it was announced that the Social Democrats would support the independent candidacy of the current president of the Oeiras municipality in the municipal elections.
“It was confirmed today in a statement from the National Political Committee that the PSD will support Isaltino Morais’s candidacy for the Oeiras City Council. I could recall the candidate’s history and his relationship with public affairs, but I will not go that route,” he began in a note sent to newsrooms.
The IL candidate expressed regret that “the party of Francisco Sá Carneiro, for incomprehensible tactical reasons or for a few positions in the municipal executive and/or the Municipal Assembly, has given up on opposing.”
“The PSD remains aligned with Isaltino Morais, as it has been in recent years,” he stated.
Bruno Mourão Martins also recalled, “although memory seems increasingly rare in politics,” that “seven months ago, the same PSD leadership, which now approved the support for Isaltino Morais, had established as a rule for the upcoming municipal elections that supported candidates should ‘present an unblemished conduct,'” to ensure “that their actions would not compromise their integrity or that of the PSD itself.”
“Apparently, the PSD leadership is not paying attention to the news. Or else, according to their standards of ethics, integrity, and responsibility, there is no issue in applying the principle that some daughters and others are stepchildren in public contracting in Oeiras,” he added.
It should be noted that the PSD announced on Tuesday that it will support the independent candidacy of Isaltino Morais in Oeiras, a decision made in a meeting of the party’s National Political Committee.

The PSD announced today that it will support the independent candidacies of Isaltino Morais in Oeiras and former CDU mayor Maria das Dores Meira in Setúbal, while also confirming the candidacy of Luís Filipe Menezes in Gaia.
Isaltino Morais was first elected president of the Oeiras City Council in 1985 on the PSD ticket. He subsequently renewed his mandate in the elections of 1989, 1993, 1997, and 2001.
In 2009, he won the municipal elections in Oeiras again, this time as an independent. However, he interrupted his mandate in 2013 after being sentenced to two years in prison for tax fraud and money laundering.
He ran again in 2017 and won the elections, a feat repeated in 2021.
Given the term limit of three consecutive terms, this year’s municipal elections will be the last in which Isaltino Morais can compete in the Oeiras municipality.
The municipal elections are set to take place on October 12.
