Carlos Moedas says the choice in Lisbon is “between moderation and radicalism”

“It is a simple choice, but with enormous consequences: between moderation, the moderation that dreams and acts, and radicalism, the radicalism that has managed to undermine much of the Socialist Party and that has harmed the country so much, and which now wants to bring this failed model to our Lisbon,” declared Carlos Moedas at the launch of his campaign titled “For You, Lisbon.”

In a room filled with about 300 people at the Estufa Fria in Lisbon, Carlos Moedas began by thanking Prime Minister and PSD President Luís Montenegro and former PSD President Manuela Ferreira Leite for supporting his candidacy in the 2021 local elections.

The social democrat also expressed gratitude to the three parties that formed the coalition, starting with his long-standing party, the PSD, followed by CDS-PP, which he described as “the always faithful friend,” and IL for its “courage” in partnering for the first time in a Lisbon City Council candidacy, “with renewed energy.”

The current Mayor of Lisbon announced on Friday his intention to run again in the municipal elections scheduled for October 12.

On Tuesday, an agreement was announced for a coalition between PSD, CDS-PP, and IL in Lisbon following months of negotiations.

In addition to Carlos Moedas’ re-election bid, candidacies have been announced by Alexandra Leitão (PS), João Ferreira (CDU), Carolina Serrão (BE), Ossanda Líber (New Right), José Pinto Coelho (Ergue-te), Bruno Mascarenhas (Chega), and José Almeida (Volt) for the Lisbon City Council presidency.

In the current term (2021-2025), Carlos Moedas governs Lisbon without an absolute majority. He was elected by the “New Times” coalition – PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM/Aliança, which secured seven mandates among the 17 that make up the executive.

The current administration also includes seven members elected from the “More Lisbon” coalition – PS/Livre, two from CDU (PCP/PEV coalition), and one from BE.
