“After four years in office, Carlos Moedas’ (PSD) administration has left a city dirtier, more unequal, more chaotic, and harder to live in. With Carlos Moedas, there is propaganda but no substance. There is image, but no action,” stated Alexandra Leitão.
The socialist made her remarks during the formalization of the coalition agreement in Lisbon between PS, Livre, BE, and PAN for the municipal elections on October 12, at an event at the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, attended by the national leaders of the four parties.
The coalition agreement ‘Viver Lisboa’ (initially announced as ‘Lisboa Decidida’) was signed by Alexandra Leitão for the PS, Carlos Teixeira for Livre, Carolina Serrão for BE, and António Morgado Valente for PAN.
In her speech, the socialist responded to the address by social democrat Carlos Moedas during the launch of his candidacy in coalition with PSD, CDS-PP, and IL, where he stated that the choice in Lisbon would be between moderation and the radicalism of the PS.
“Radical is not having a housing policy. […] Radical is abandoning public space to litter, degradation, and neglect. Radical is talking about security but not having sufficient public lighting, not installing surveillance cameras, and having a municipal police force at historic lows in terms of the number of officers,” argued Alexandra Leitão.
The head of the left-wing party coalition emphasized: “It is against this radicalism, disguised as moderation, that this coalition rises.”
In the current term (2021-2025), the Lisbon City Council is led by social democrat Carlos Moedas (governing without an absolute majority), who has already announced his bid for re-election through a coalition between PSD, CDS-PP, and IL, named “Por ti, Lisboa.”
The candidates for the presidency of the Lisbon City Council in the municipal elections on October 12 are: Alexandra Leitão (PS/Livre/BE/PAN), Carlos Moedas (PSD/CDS-PP/IL), João Ferreira (CDU—PCP/PEV coalition), Ossanda Líber (Nova Direita), José Pinto Coelho (Ergue-te!), Bruno Mascarenhas (Chega), and José Almeida (Volt).
The current executive includes seven elected from the ‘Novos Tempos’ coalition – PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM/Aliança, seven from the ‘Mais Lisboa’ coalition – PS/Livre, two from CDU, and one from BE.
