The beach in Nazaré, located in the district of Leiria, was closed for health reasons late Thursday, as confirmed by the commander of the Nazaré Port Captaincy. A red flag was raised due to this closure.
This action followed an analysis by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) which identified a “microbiological contamination,” as stated by Rui Passadouro, the coordinator of the Public Health Unit of the Local Health Unit of the Leiria Region.
A risk assessment conducted in collaboration with the APA and the Hydrographic Region Administration of the Center led to the decision to prohibit swimming at the beach for public health concerns.
Rui Passadouro confirmed that the Public Health Unit will continue to monitor the situation, conducting additional analyses. The beach will be reopened once the water quality no longer poses a risk to the public.
