Following the presentation of João Paulo Correia’s candidacy for the Vila Nova de Gaia council, the Socialist leader, when questioned on how the PS would vote on two issues, initially responded regarding the IRC tax reduction that they would wait for the proposal to arrive at the Assembly of the Republic.
Concerning the extraordinary pension announced by the prime minister on Thursday during the State of the Nation debate, José Luís Carneiro stated that the measure “is utilitarian but has an electoral character,” noting, however, that the PS cannot “oppose a measure that has some benefit for pensioners.”
“When we were in government, pensions increased every year. It was small at the time; some considered it insufficient, but they increased every year. We also adopted an extraordinary measure to cope with the inflation resulting from the war in Ukraine,” the PS leader recalled.
He continued: “This measure taken by the Government, with extraordinary character, is withdrawn in January and, from our point of view, it could be feasible for us to have a dialogue with the Government, provided the Government is willing to dialogue with the PS, to seek to enhance, notably, the minimum pensions.”

The Secretary-General of the PS, José Luís Carneiro, stated today in Vila Nova de Gaia that he was touched by the President of the Republic’s call to attention regarding the immigration law under review by the head of state.
The announcement from Luís Montenegro includes a new extraordinary supplement for all pensions up to 1,567.50 euros, ranging between one hundred and two hundred euros, to be paid in September.
The Government will also move forward with a proposal to reduce IRC to 19% in 2026, 18% in 2027, and 17% in 2028.
These announcements were made by Luís Montenegro at the opening of the state of the nation debate in parliament.
