The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) released the weather forecast for this weekend, July 19 and 20, in mainland Portugal. Are your holidays starting now?
On Saturday, the northern and central regions will experience “periods of heavy cloudiness,” which will start to diminish “during the afternoon,” according to IPMA.
“Light rain or drizzle” is likely “until early morning and late afternoon,” becoming moderate in Minho by the end of the day. Wind will blow “from light to moderate” at 30 km/h but could be “strong” in the highlands of the central region.
A “slight increase in the minimum temperature” is expected.
In the southern region, the sky will be “mostly clear,” although “periods of heavier cloudiness” may occur until early morning. There will also be a “slight increase in the minimum temperature, except in eastern Algarve.”
Similar scenarios are expected in Greater Lisbon and Greater Porto.
And on Sunday?
On Sunday, the weather will not change significantly. There will be “periods of heavy cloudiness, gradually decreasing in the afternoon, and mostly clear skies in eastern Algarve.”
“Periods of rain” may occur “on the northern coast,” being “more frequent until early morning, extending to the northern interior and central region during the morning.” Additionally, it may fall “lightly and sporadically in Alto Alentejo and the coastal strip of the southern region until mid-afternoon.”
Wind will blow “from light to moderate,” becoming “strong on the southern coast of Algarve in the afternoon and in the highlands.”
“A slight drop in temperature” is forecasted.
Forecast for the week of July 21 to 27
According to IPMA, the week of July 21 to 27 “should be considered dry and warm.” Following the passage of an Azores anticyclone—which will bring mild temperatures—there will be “a general increase in temperatures in the following days” starting Thursday, July 24.
“This weather pattern will result in the week starting with some cloudiness and the possibility of light rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 22 and 23. With the change in wind direction mid-week, skies will become mostly clear, and the wind will intensify along the west coast,” the notice reads.
Beginning Thursday, maximum temperatures will exceed 35°C south of the Tagus River, potentially “reaching even 40°C during the weekend in areas like Vale do Tejo and Alentejo.”
“Tropical nights are expected in the southern region starting Friday, July 24, a situation that will likely extend to most of the country on the nights of July 26 and 27, even in coastal areas such as the metropolitan regions of Porto and Lisbon,” the notice states.
Thus, IPMA reports that “maximum temperatures will range between 23°C and 38°C in the northern and central interior regions, between 29°C and 41°C in the southern region, and between 21°C and 35°C in coastal areas.”
Conversely, “the minimum temperature in the mainland will range between 9°C and 20°C in the northern and central interior regions, between 12°C and 22°C in the southern region, and coastal areas will see values between 13°C and 23°C.”
