In a speech at the X National Convention of IL in Alcobaça, Nuno Morna expressed openness to coalitions, emphasizing they should be considered carefully and remain exceptions rather than the norm.
“Coalitions should respect our principles, not force us to compromise on our long-standing beliefs, and not transform us into a political crutch for a decaying regime,” stated Nuno Morna, who served as a regional deputy from 2023 to 2025.
Morna insisted that exceptions should not become norms and warned against coalition agreements that would dilute IL’s identity, describing such situations as ‘capitulation’ rather than alliances.
“We’ve always stated that we are running a marathon, not here to be decorative or obedient extras in a crumbling theatre. We are here to bring change. Therefore, for me, it’s liberalism or nothing,” he asserted.
The former regional deputy declared his unwillingness to engage in ‘tactical silences or conveniences.’
“I am not here to be a footnote in a socialist budget or an extra in occasional arrangements. I am here to change the country, and changing the country begins with saying no: no to situational socialism, no to authoritarian conservatism,” he declared.
At the start of his brief remarks, Nuno Morna strongly criticized the current AD Government, accusing it of presenting recycled proposals, being statist and centralist, and questioning its courage to govern.
“Where is the reform of the fiscal system, that eternal promise? (…) Where is the effective reduction of the State? The genuine privatization program? Nothing, everything is absent, everything buried under fear. A government that lacks the courage to make cuts, to reform, is not a government, it’s the liquidating commission of national ambition,” he accused.
Nuno Morna served as a regional deputy in Madeira from 2023 to 2025 and was also the coordinator of the IL nucleus in the archipelago, a position he resigned from in June 2024, succeeded by Gonçalo Maia Camelo.
In the February 2025 convention, he left Rui Rocha’s leadership after clashing with the new IL coordinator in Madeira.
