Spanish swimmer dies during a competition in Cascais. He was 53 years old.

A Spanish national died on Saturday while participating in an open water swimming event from Oeiras to Cascais, after suffering a cardiac arrest during the competition.

The incident was reported at 12:50 p.m. by the event organizers, as detailed in a Facebook post by the National Maritime Authority (AMN). The swimmer, aged 53, was participating in the 10km SWIM GP Oeiras-Cascais event in the Bay of Cascais.

The AMN was informed that the swimmer experienced “a cardiac arrest while participating in the event,” prompting an immediate response from the Cascais Maritime Police Command, lifeboat crew from the Cascais Lifeboat Station, the event’s medical team, Estoril Volunteer Firefighters, and the INEM Emergency Medical and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER).

Upon arrival at the scene, AMN confirmed that the event’s medical team had removed the victim from the water to São Pedro do Estoril beach, where lifeguards began resuscitation efforts. These efforts were continued by lifeboat crew members, firefighters, and VMER personnel upon their arrival.

The man was transported in “very serious” condition to an unspecified hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Cascais Maritime Police Command is handling the case.
