A 55-year-old man died on Saturday morning, reportedly after suffering a cardiac arrest, in the Douro River, in the municipality of Torre de Moncorvo, Bragança.
The National Maritime Authority (AMN) reported that the Canadian national was assisted after allegedly suffering a cardiac arrest at the Foz do Sabor dock, with the causes of the incident still unknown.
The AMN stated that the victim “was promptly removed from the dock and subsequently transported by firefighters to a hospital, where resuscitation efforts were made but were unsuccessful, leading to the declaration of death.”
The alert was raised at 10:44 a.m. through the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center, prompting the immediate deployment of the Local Command of the Maritime Police of the Douro, a Vila Nova de Foz Côa Immediate Life Support (SIV) vehicle, and members of the Torre de Moncorvo Volunteer Firefighters.
The Local Command of the Maritime Police of the Douro is handling the incident.
On the same day in Cascais, the AMN was called upon for a similar rescue. The authority explained that another man, a Spaniard participating in an open water competition, suffered “a cardiac arrest while participating in the event.”
Upon arrival at the scene, “it was found that the medical team of the event had removed the victim from the water to the beach of São Pedro do Estoril. Lifeguards on duty promptly initiated resuscitation efforts until the arrival of lifeboat station crew members and firefighters and VMER personnel, who continued the efforts.”
The man was hospitalized, and it was at the hospital where the death was declared.
