PS “demands a response” from the Government to mitigate US tariffs

The Government is urged to respond to the textile, clothing, and footwear industries, which currently need a plan to mitigate the effects of tariffs that might be imposed by the United States. “The Government must have a well-prepared plan to protect these companies and to seek to defend our country’s interests with the European Union,” stated the socialist leader.

In Guimarães, Braga district, at the entrance to the presentation of Ricardo Costa’s candidacy for the presidency of the Guimarães City Council, the Secretary-General of the PS wanted to focus attention on the economy.

“We are here with hundreds of Guimarães entrepreneurs and civic leaders, addressing a very serious issue for businesses in this region. The United States has announced 30% tariffs on European products. This impact on our economy requires a well-prepared plan from the Government, both in Portugal and within the European Union,” he said.

José Luís Carneiro listed several economic sectors needing attention, including textiles, clothing, footwear, wine, and health.

“These sectors will be profoundly affected by the tariffs set to be adopted by the U.S. My fundamental concern is the growth of our country’s economy. Our economy needs to grow, needs to create better wages, and for this, it relies on our entrepreneurs and our companies,” he mentioned.

Highlighting the Government’s announcement of a reduction in the IRC, José Luís Carneiro wanted to “make clear” that the PS supports the reduction of IRC, although “targeted towards economic policy goals, particularly to ensure an income agreement that values wages, to seek investment in technological modernization and innovation, and to ensure that companies are prepared to face the challenge of tariffs and international competition.”

“Studies by the Bank of Portugal show that tariffs can have an impact on our economy, potentially leading to a permanent loss of more than 3 billion euros. You can trust the Socialist Party to defend these concerns in Parliament and during the future discussion of the State Budget,” he concluded.
