Temperatures are set to rise starting Thursday, surpassing 40 degrees in some regions of mainland Portugal, particularly in the interior, according to forecasts released today by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
“There is a trend for the anticyclone, located in the Azores region, to intensify and extend towards Central Europe from the 24th, causing an easterly flow and, consequently, transporting hot and dry air masses over the Iberian Peninsula and the Madeira archipelago,” explained the IPMA in a statement.
Thus, after days “with temperatures close to, or slightly below, normal for the season on the mainland,” which will continue at the start of this week, “a significant rise in air temperature is expected at the end of the week,” the same statement indicated.
The IPMA forecasts that maximum temperatures will rise above “30°C across most of the mainland territory, potentially exceeding 40°C in some regions, especially in the interior.”
In the Madeira archipelago, maximum temperatures “may hover around or even surpass 30°C, particularly on the southern slope and in mountainous regions,” it added.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere acknowledges that there is still “some uncertainty regarding the intensity and duration of the episode, advising monitoring of forecasts in the coming days.”
