Correction to Cape Verde’s 2023 GDP does not affect growth trajectory

“The global growth rate, even with this downward revision, does not entirely deviate from its trajectory, which has been consistent over time, albeit with variations that we will learn more about in detail,” stated Eurico Monteiro to journalists in Praia.

“Overall, [the revision] does not remove Cabo Verde from an economic growth trajectory,” he noted.

The official emphasized that “it is necessary to consider the entire course of these last years, an extraordinary recovery in 2022,” following the slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, “a very significant growth rate” in 2023, which “was not at all expected to maintain the same pace throughout all the years.”

“Despite all this, looking at the whole (…) the recovery has been consistent” and “six-tenths more or less does not significantly alter the growth path of the Cabo Verdean economy,” he concluded.

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) of Cabo Verde published today the Definitive National Accounts of 2023, which adjust the provisional economic growth value by 0.6 percentage points for 2023, initially set at 5.4%.

The provisional value was updated in October 2024, by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), following the publication of the final accounts for 2022 and more recently, in April, after the revision of the quarterly accounts.
