More than 60 municipalities in 10 districts are at maximum fire risk

Several municipalities in the northern and central interior and the Algarve are still at a very high risk of rural fire, as reported by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The fire risk is expected to increase throughout the week and at least until the beginning of the following week, according to IPMA’s calculations.

This risk, assessed by IPMA, is categorized into five levels ranging from low to maximum. The calculations consider air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and the amount of precipitation in the last 24 hours.

From today, IPMA forecasts a rise in temperatures, possibly exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some regions of mainland Portugal, especially inland areas.

The minimum temperature is expected to surpass 20°C in some inland areas, notably in the southern region, Tagus Valley, and Beira Baixa.

Due to the hot weather, IPMA issued a yellow warning for the districts of Évora, Faro, Setúbal, Santarém, Lisbon, Beja, and Portalegre from 09:00 on Friday to 18:00 on Saturday.

A yellow warning is issued when there is a risk for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.

Today’s forecast for the mainland predicts clear or slightly cloudy skies, strong winds in the western coastal strip and highlands, particularly during the afternoon, and an increase in maximum temperature, except in the northeastern Transmontano and Beira Interior regions.

Minimum temperatures will range between 11 degrees Celsius (in Guarda) and 20 degrees (in Faro), with maximums between 23 (in Leiria, Aveiro, Porto, and Viana do Castelo) and 34 (in Castelo Branco).
