Portugal sued for failures in rules on fruits, vegetables, and seeds

The European Commission has issued a notification letter to Portugal, granting a two-month deadline to align its national legislation with EU Directive 2024/2963. This directive concerns the admission of new varieties of agricultural and horticultural plant species in compliance with the Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO) protocols.

Concerning EU Directive 2024/3010, Portugal is also required to report to Brussels within the same timeframe on its adherence to EU regulations on the marketing of seeds, propagation materials, and plants according to the EU phytosanitary legislation requirements.

If Portugal fails to provide satisfactory responses in both instances, Brussels may advance to the second stage of the infringement process by issuing a reasoned opinion.
