Fair Life Movement calls for protest in Lisbon for the right to housing

The movement has announced on social media a protest scheduled for Wednesday at 19:00 on Avenida João XXI, in front of the Council of Ministers, opposing “the destruction of houses, evictions, and lies.”

They also advocate for “an emergency housing plan and homes affordable based on salaries.”

Last week, the municipalities of Loures and Amadora, both in the Lisbon district and led by the PS party, conducted demolitions of makeshift homes built by residents, sparking significant controversy.

The municipality of Loures began demolishing 64 precarious homes in the Talude Militar neighborhood on Monday, affecting 161 residents.

Over two days, 55 homes were demolished before operations were halted by a Lisbon court order following an injunction by 14 residents.

In Amadora, plans to demolish 22 illegal structures on Estrada Militar da Mina de Água resulted in eight demolitions by last Thursday.

The movement Vida Justa, among other organizations, has criticized the municipalities’ actions, accusing them of insufficient support and solutions, and calls for a national program to address the growing problem.

Ricardo Leão, the mayor of Loures, accused the Vida Justa movement of “harming the people” of Talude by “preventing them from speaking” with municipal officials.

“Vida Justa is manipulating these families,” he stated, asserting that the municipality has been “engaging with everyone” in Talude Militar since March, while the civic movement supports residents by, among other activities, raising donations.

The Vida Justa movement quickly responded to the mayor’s comments, accusing him of “lying” and attempting to “discredit” their efforts.
