The Polícia Judiciária (PJ) has apprehended a 22-year-old man accused of assaulting two individuals, including a Public Security Police officer, during a June festival in Ribeira Brava, Madeira. The officer sustained life-threatening injuries.
In a statement released on Friday, it was noted that the incidents occurred after a dispute between the assailant and the victims.
The officer was assaulted with a bladed weapon in the chest and back, posing a life-threatening risk. He was urgently transported to Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, where surgery rendered him out of danger, the PJ reported.
The stabbing took place during the early hours at the São Pedro festival in Ribeira Brava.
The coordination between the Madeira Criminal Investigation Department, managed by the PJ, and the PJ’s Scientific Police Laboratory was critical in gathering evidence that led to charging the attacker with the injuries. Following the arrest and due to strong indications of attempted murder and physical assault, the suspect underwent an initial judicial interrogation and was remanded in custody.
The detainee has a criminal background and was on parole for attempted murder, illegal weapon possession, and serious physical assault at the time of the incident.
