Several municipalities in the north, center, and Algarve of Portugal remain at a very high risk of rural fires, with nearly all other regions on the mainland at high risk.
The risk of rural fires will persist at these levels at least until the end of next week.
This risk, as determined by IPMA, is measured on a scale of five levels, ranging from reduced to maximum. The calculations are based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and rainfall in the past 24 hours.
Due to the hot weather, IPMA has extended the yellow weather warning for heat in 14 districts of mainland Portugal until 00:00 on Tuesday, ending today only in Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, and Lisbon.
The yellow warning issued for the weekend for all districts of the country has been extended until 00:00 on Tuesday in Beja, Braga, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Évora, Faro, Guarda, Portalegre, Porto, Santarém, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Vila Real, and Viseu.
In the districts of Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, and Lisbon, where “persistent high maximum temperature values are expected, except in the coastal strip,” the yellow warning ends at 18:00 today.
The yellow warning is issued when there is a risk to certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.
IPMA forecasts hot weather for the mainland today, with clear skies and a rise in maximum temperatures inland, and a decrease in the coastal strips of the Central and Southern regions.
Winds will be light to moderate (up to 30 kilometers per hour – km/h), predominantly from the east, occasionally strong (up to 40 km/h) in the highlands until early morning, turning to north/northwest in the afternoon, especially on the west coast, and to southwest on the south coast of the Algarve.
Minimum temperatures will vary between 13 degrees Celsius (in Bragança and Leiria) and 22 (in Portalegre) and maximums between 27 (in Aveiro and Sines) and 39 (in Santarém and Évora).
