A plane that took off on Friday from Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto, bound for Campinas, Brazil, was forced to make an emergency landing on the other side of the ocean.
The incident involved an Azul Linhas Aéreas flight, which diverted to Recife, Brazil, after one of the pilots fell ill, according to reports on Saturday from Brazilian publications.
In a statement, the Brazilian airline explained that the immediate diversion was necessary to ensure prompt medical attention.
“Azul regrets any inconvenience and emphasizes that such measures are necessary to ensure the safety of its operations, a primary value for the company,” the statement read.
The emergency landing occurred around 5 p.m. local time (9 p.m. in Porto), and the aircraft resumed its journey to the initial destination about 1.5 hours later.
Some passengers reportedly shared the experience on social media, according to UOL, noting that the landing was peaceful and everything proceeded smoothly.
