Strike law? “Chega’s position is not well understood”

In statements made in Charneca de Caparica, Almada, Mariana Leitão responded to a challenge issued by Chega leader André Ventura for a broad consensus on the right to alter strike laws.

“I am uncertain about Chega’s position on this matter,” Mariana Leitão said, highlighting that the party previously supported the idea of security forces striking.

“We have a completely different view, considering the potential risks to public safety. A new strike law for security forces might jeopardize the welfare of individuals in the country,” she noted.

Leitão concluded that “given the unpredictable nature of Chega’s proposals, consensus at this stage is hard to anticipate.”

However, she argued for “improvements in strike regulations” to ensure minimum services and to avoid dependence on political interests within some union structures.

She emphasized, “There shouldn’t be a conflict between the right to strike and public access to services, as is the case today,” while acknowledging the importance of preserving the right to strike without negatively impacting people’s lives.

Leitão remarked on the deficiencies in Portugal’s public services, which rely heavily on overtime that lacks minimum service requirements defined by law.

“It’s evident that adaptations are necessary to ensure minimal disruption from any type of strike, whether overtime or otherwise,” she said.

On Friday, André Ventura expressed willingness for a “broad consensus” with PSD, IL, and CDS to amend strike laws, advocating for a balance between strike rights and public service continuity.

“We aim to reach the broadest possible consensus on specific areas needing change in the strike law,” Ventura stated upon arriving at Quinta Monte Redondo in Sintra for a candidate presentation session.

The Chega leader pointed out that there are agreed-upon measures among right-wing parties, particularly that public services like transportation should not stop arbitrarily, leaving people without services.

Another consensus is that those with passes, whether for Carris or CP, should not experience service disruption without compensation during a strike.
