Order of Architects declares “official mourning” for the death of Nuno Portas

“Any word about the legacy of Nuno Portas in the history of Portuguese architecture falls short of the importance of the work he left us,” reads a statement from OA.

The architect Nuno Portas, an “honorary member” of OA, died today in Lisbon at the age of 90.

OA emphasizes that Nuno Portas was “a great architect [and] a magnificent teacher.”

“The Order of Architects declares official mourning today for the passing of one of its most esteemed members.”

“It is important to celebrate the extraordinary life of Nuno Portas as an architect, as the greatest architect-urbanist in contemporary history, but also as a decisive political leader in post-April 25 [1974] housing policies. We celebrate Nuno Portas also as a great proponent of planning legislation in Portugal,” notes the OA, which “extends condolences to the family, friends, and all who shared a very full life with him.”

“Portuguese architecture, indeed the entire national culture, has lost a great figure,” concludes the professional Order.

The architect Nuno Portas, who passed away today at 90 years old in Lisbon, was notable as a thinker, researcher, and promoter of housing and urban policies both in Portugal and abroad, gaining international recognition, particularly in Spain and Brazil.

Nuno Portas, father of Paulo and Miguel Portas, died at the age of 90. The news was shared by Helena Sacadura Cabral on her Instagram page this Sunday, July 27.

“Nuno Portas consistently expressed concern about citizens’ rights to dignified housing and the city. He was the Secretary of State for Housing and Urban Planning in 1974, following the April 25th Revolution. He established the Local Ambulatory Support Service to address chronic and urgent needs created by years of dictatorship. Throughout his work and life, he staunchly defended the ‘right to the city.'”
