
The leader of the Socialist Party (PS) indicated that the 15% tariffs imposed by the United States are lower than the current 25% and are similar to what Japan has negotiated.
The European Union (EU) and the United States have reached a trade agreement establishing a 15% tariff on European products.
José Luís Carneiro remarked that the new deal is more favorable than that of Canada, asserting that while the United Kingdom has a better deal, it does not have a trade surplus.
“The most important aspect is to stabilize expectations and eliminate uncertainty. Imposing tariffs would only increase product costs in our markets,” he emphasized.
Carneiro suggested that the Portuguese government must urgently assess the tariff’s impact on Portuguese sectors exporting to the US, such as clothing, footwear, and metalworking, as well as the health sector.
“It is crucial to conduct a thorough evaluation of these tariffs’ impact on our economy. Additionally, it is vital to estimate their effects within the EU economy, considering that over 70% of our trade is with Europe, and assess all economic impacts detrimental to the national economy,” he noted.
The US and the EU “reached an agreement,” announced the US President after meeting with the president of the European Commission.
